Who should see an internal medicine doctor?
Internal medicine doctors (also known as internists) focus on adult organs inside the body, such as the liver, kidneys, stomach and heart. They specialize in the way these organs interact with, and affect each other. For this reason, internists are helpful when you are experiencing a long-term illness, since it is rare that your illness affects just one part of your body.
Internists are primary care physicians. This means they are usually the first doctor you see when you begin to feel sick. They are also the doctor you’ll see the most often for things like health checkups and screenings.
After being diagnosed with an illness, an internist is the doctor who will help you manage your condition long term, even if you end up seeing doctors of other specialties too.
