An OB/GYN is a doctor who specializes in the process of pregnancy and the female reproductive system.

Obstetrics refers to pregnancy medical care. An obstetrician helps ensure a safe gestation period for both the mother and baby before, during and immediately after birth (i.e. the postpartum period).

Gynaecology refers to the treatment of the female:

  • Uterus
  • Fallopian tubes
  • Cervix
  • Vulva
  • Ovaries
  • Vagina

If you are a woman, you should see an OB/GYN if you experience the following conditions, symptoms or life events:

  • Planning to become, or are already sexually active
  • Planning to become, or are already pregnant
  • Difficulty becoming pregnant (i.e. infertility)
  • Planning to, or are already breastfeeding
  • Postpartum depression
  • Urinary tract infection (UTI) or other infection
  • Urinary incontinence, overactive bladder or infrequent urination
  • Pain in the pelvic region (including pain when urinating or pain during sexual intercourse)
  • Abnormal periods (e.g. infrequent occurrence, light or heavy bleeding, extreme pain during menstruation, etc.)
  • Extreme mood swings
  • Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) (e.g. bloating and cramps, headaches, fatigue, sleeplessness, mood changes, appetite changes, skin and hair changes, breast tenderness, etc.)
  • Itching or dryness in the genital area
  • Excretions or abnormal bleeding from the genital area
  • Perimenopause and menopause (e.g. hot flashes, changes in libido, spotting, period changes, etc.)

OB/GYN services

Our obstetrics and gynaecology services include:

  • Prenatal (i.e. antenatal) pregnancy screening and health management (e.g. for recurrent pregnancy loss, ectopic pregnancy, fetal stress or deficiencies, pre-eclampsia, gestational high blood pressure, gestational diabetes, etc.)
  • Pregnancy ultrasound
  • Treatment and management of gestational conditions such as antepartum hemorrhage (APH) and high risk pregnancies
  • Natural and epidural baby delivery (including vaginal delivery, Cesarean delivery (i.e. C-section), vacuum delivery, etc.)
  • Emergency and elective lower segment Cesarean section (LSCS)
  • Treatment of postpartum depression
  • Breast exams (note: we do not do mammograms)
  • Hysterosalpingography (i.e. X-ray of womb and fallopian tubes) and diagnostic laparoscopy
  • Pelvic exams, Pap smears and biopsies (such as endometrial biopsies and HPV-DNA testing and cervical cancer screening)
  • Treatment and management of gynecological cancers
  • Advice, prevention and treatment of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), human papillomavirus (HPV) and human immunodeficiency viruses (HIV), including pelvic inflammatory disease
  • Open, vaginal and laparoscopic hysterectomies (i.e. uterus and sometimes cervix removal), oophorectomy (i.e. ovary removal), salpingectomy (i.e. fallopian tube removal) and myomectomy (i.e. fibroid removal)
  • Birth control (i.e. contraception) including prescription pills, patches, intrauterine device (IUD), spermicide, etc.
  • Tubal ligation (i.e. tube tying, sterilization)
  • Incomplete abortion management
  • Diagnosis and management of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and fibroids
  • Treatment and management of perimenopause and menopause
