Who should see an ophthalmologist?
An ophthalmologist is a doctor of the eyes. They treat eye diseases and vision problems. Sometimes, these treatments involve surgery. Opthamologists also prescribe glasses and contact lenses to correct distorted vision.
Optometrists are also eye doctors. However, they help with primary eye care, such as eye exams, eye prescriptions, fitting for glasses and ongoing care of eye conditions.
In general, if you or your child have trouble seeing, or experience abnormalities with your eyes, you should see an optometrist or ophthalmologist.
It is important to note that vision problems can occur before symptoms appear. For this reason it is important to have your eyes screened on a regular basis. For most people, this is once per year. Children should be screened by age 6.
Those with diabetes should especially be in touch with an eye doctor. They can be at risk for diabetic retinopathy.
