Who should see an orthopedist?
An orthopedic surgeon (i.e. an orthopedist) is a doctor who specializes in the bones, joints, tendons, ligaments, cartilage, muscles and other soft tissues in the body. They also address the nerves in these areas.
While orthopedists are surgeons, this doesn’t mean that all the treatments they administer involve surgery. They may treat you non-surgically too.
You may be referred to an orthopedist by a general physician if you present with bone or muscle-related symptoms.
If you visit an emergency room for a traumatic injury, an orthopedic surgeon may be the person to attend to you.
If you or your child is born with a musculoskeletal condition, an orthopedic surgeon may be able to help treat it.
However, you may also make an appointment with an orthopedic surgeon if you experience the following symptoms or conditions:
- Chronic pain or swelling in the shoulders, back, hips, knees, elbows, wrists or other joints
- Pain from repetitive movements
- Difficulty using bones and muscles due to pain (e.g. climbing stairs, getting in and out of bed, etc.)
- Stiffness or weakness in the muscles or bones
- Tingling or numbing anywhere in the body
- Misshapen or broken bones
- Torn, sprained or twisted muscles (e.g. twisted ankles, sprained wrist, etc.)
- Bruising
- Poor posture
- Curved spine (e.g. scoliosis)
And so on.
