Who should see a pathologist or get a lab test done?

Typically, doctors order lab tests from pathologists or pathology departments when they suspect a patient may have a disease or infection. If you present with certain symptoms, you may be asked to visit a laboratory to have your blood taken, or to provide a urine, stool, tissue, mucus, saliva or other type of sample from your body.
These samples are then looked at under a microscope, or by using other diagnostic equipment. By doing so, pathologists and lab technicians are able to determine whether or not you have a sickness. This can then pave the way to proper and effective treatment protocols for your case.
Other times, people simply want to have a lab test done to understand the state of their health. For example, they may want to know how much Vitamin D is in their blood, or whether they are allergic to certain foods. This request may come from an external health provider, such as a naturopath.
