Who should see a pediatrician?
A pediatrician is a doctor who specializes in the health and development of infants, children and teens, up to the age of 18.
Many times, primary medical care for these age groups can also be handled by a general physician (sometimes called a family physician). However, special events may happen in a child’s life that require a pediatrician, or pediatric services by doctors who specialize in other areas, such as orthopedics or neurosurgery.
You should visit a doctor or pediatrician if you or your child experiences the following conditions:
- Pregnancy and childbirth (see our page on obstetrics and gynaecology for more on this)
- Feeding difficulties
- Speech impediments or delays
- Growth abnormalities (e.g. growing slowly or quickly)
- Cognitive difficulties or delays
- Difficulties seeing or hearing
- Fever, cold or sickness (especially for a temperature of 100.4°F, 38°C or higher)
- Rash, hives, bumps, itching or other skin conditions
- Vomiting and diarrhea (especially if you see dark spots)
- Changes in urine (e.g. dark urine, coloured urine or less frequent urination)
- Abnormal, incessant crying
- Difficulty breathing (e.g. wheezing, clogged nostrils, shortness of breath, blue lips or nails)
- Pain anywhere in the body (e.g. stomach, head, etc.)
